Five Fabulous West Sussex Days in November

Shore Walks & Shooting Stars

Pink sunset at Bosham, with still water and boats with the village in the background

Stroll down by the shore at Chichester Harbour, perhaps Bosham or Dell Quay, taking in the expansive skies, beautiful sunrises, and rich array of bird life. Then enjoy a roast dinner at the pub, warmed by a roaring open fire, most pubs are dog friendly too. After lunch spend the afternoon at the Weald & Downland museum to browse their delightful Christmas Market. After dinner head out to the hills by foot or car (Harting Down dark sky reserve has a car park at the top) or into your garden and look out for the natural fireworks of the Leonid meteor shower that will be lighting up the night sky throughout November.

Muddy Boots and Cosy Evenings

Head out into the woods of the South Downs for muddy walks with your pooch. You could walk through Kingley Vale nature reserve to the top of Bow Hill, for glorious views and wildlife spotting. Return to your cottage for an evening snuggling up by the log burner, playing board games, and enjoying wine and cheese. Play your favourite tunes to set the mood (all the cottages except Meadow Hide have a bluetooth connected sound system). Finish the eve with a muscle relaxing dip into the hot tub underneath bright November stars.

A Fairy Tale Town & Pleasure Gardens

Visit the romantic town of Petworth, with it's cobbled streets, independent shops, and famed antique shops & art galleries. Walk through the pleasure gardens and deer park at Petworth House and see and hear the fabulous spectacle of the deer rut on a beautiful walk around the lake and through parkland rich with ancient trees. In town you will be spoilt for choice for places to eat and drink, from quirky cafes to swish restaurants. The Hungry Guest cafe is a tranquil spot in Newlands art gallery with delicious breakfasts and lunches, and pastries from their famed bakery. Discover their artisan food shop nearby for delectable ingredients to cook up in your modern Oakwood West kitchen.

Designer Gear & Naval Experiences

Treat yourself, or get ahead on your Christmas shopping, with the outlet designer shops at Gunwharf Quays. A few favourites are Calvin Klein, French Connection, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Le Creuset, and there's even a Cadbury's outlet. It's a destination shopping location, which also has lots of great restaurants with views out over Portsmouth harbour. The Giggling Squid has just opened there, if you like Thai food, it's one to try. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is next to Gunwharf and is great for a day out, the kids will love Action Stations and everyone will be fascinated exploring the HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's flagship, plus there are harbour boat trips and lots of museums to discover.

Bonfires & Fireworks

We couldn't write about November in Sussex without mentioning the local tradition for fabulous bonfire celebrations. A local favourite of ours is at Heyshott, it's on November 9th this year. Join a torch lit procession led by pipes and drums that culminates in the lighting of a towering bonfire, it's followed by a firework display. Drink mulled wine, with a hog roast bap, and watch a Punch & Judy show as the action commences!
